I love "firsts" and this sighting of a praying mantis was a first for me! Of course, I got him comfortable enough to let me hold him. He was curious it seemed, though I worried that he was also frightened. What an incredible experience though. I knew nothing about these creatures until after I got home and downloaded my photos. I didn't even know these beautiful insects were located in Colorado. I've only seen them on nature shows. I read where they can bite, but this little fella showed no aggression toward me. I showed him various flowers and would let him down to crawl around on his own and then I'd pick him back up. One time he preferred to be in my hand instead of upon a plant I was trying to get him to crawl. To my surprise, he walked away from the plant and up my arm. This day will long be remembered! It's so extraordinary running into new life forms like this.
